The Official FBI Special Agent Physical Fitness Test (PFT) Matrix
The Federal Bureau of Investigation tests Special Agent candidates under a standardized, uncompromising point scale. Points range from -2 (unacceptable failure) to +10 (elite maximum).
To pass the official FBI PFT, a candidate must fulfill two strict criteria:
- Earn at least 1 point in every single event (scoring 0 or a negative number in any event is an automatic test failure).
- Achieve a cumulative total of at least 12 points across the four events (or 15 points for candidates seeking FBI SWAT or Hostage Rescue Team tryouts).
| Points | Sit-Ups (1-Min, Male) | 300m Sprint (Male) | Push-Ups (Male) | 1.5-Mile Run (Male) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| +10 (Max) | 58+ reps | ≤ 40.9 sec | 71+ reps | ≤ 8:59 |
| +6 (Strong) | 49 – 50 reps | 45.0 – 45.9 sec | 50 – 53 reps | 10:00 – 10:29 |
| +3 (Solid) | 43 – 44 reps | 49.0 – 49.9 sec | 38 – 41 reps | 11:10 – 11:34 |
| +1 (Min Pass) | 38 – 39 reps | 52.0 – 52.4 sec | 30 – 31 reps | 12:15 – 12:24 |
| 0 (Fail) | 36 – 37 reps | 52.5 – 53.4 sec | 28 – 29 reps | 12:25 – 12:34 |
| -2 (Disqualified) | ≤ 32 reps | ≥ 55.0 sec | ≤ 24 reps | ≥ 12:50 |
FLETC Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) Architecture
The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) in Glynco, GA and Artesia, NM train agents for over 90 federal agencies, including CBP, Homeland Security Investigations, ATF, and the Secret Service. The FLETC PEB assesses candidate fitness across four standardized events:
- 1.5-Mile Aerobic Run: Evaluates sustained cardiovascular stamina in high humidity.
- Illinois Agility Run: Fast-paced change-of-direction sprint measuring tactical footwork around 4 centered cones.
- Bench Press Weight-to-Bodyweight Ratio: Evaluates upper body pressing strength relative to total body mass.
- Sit and Reach: Measures hamstring and lower back flexibility to minimize physical academy training injuries.
The Cooper Institute State POST Standard
Over 35 state Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) councils utilize testing norms established by the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas, Texas. Rather than point accumulations, Cooper POST tests require candidates to achieve a set percentile ranking (typically the 40th or 50th percentile of the general American population):
| State POST Agency | 1.5-Mile Run Passing Threshold | Push-Ups Requirement | 1-Minute Sit-Ups |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas DPS Troopers (TCOLE) | 12:30 maximum | 30 continuous | 35 repetitions |
| California Highway Patrol (POST WSTB) | 13:35 maximum | 24 repetitions | 31 repetitions |
| Florida Highway Patrol (FDLE) | 14:00 maximum | 25 repetitions | 30 repetitions |
| New York City Police (JST) | 4 min 28 sec obstacle course | Barrier climb & dummy drag | Trigger pull simulation |
How to Train for Academy Day One (Preventing Physical Attrition)
Physical conditioning is the single greatest cause of voluntary resignations during the first two weeks of police and federal academies. Experienced drill instructors emphasize three training rules:
- Train in the Proper Event Sequence: Do not practice events in isolation. The official test runs Sit-ups first, followed immediately by the 300-meter sprint, push-ups, and finishes with the 1.5-mile run. Your legs and lungs will be full of lactic acid before the run starts.
- Strict Lockout Form: In academy testing, partial reps do not count. Push-ups must break a 90-degree elbow plane; sit-ups require shoulder blades to touch the mat and elbows to break the knee plane. Train with a partner who calls out no-counts.
- Hydration & Heat Acclimatization: Federal training facilities at FLETC Glynco (Georgia) and FBI Quantico (Virginia) experience extreme summer heat index levels over 95°F. Train outdoors in midday conditions before reporting.
