The Green-and-Gray Ranger Uniform & Campaign Hat
The National Park Service uniform is among the most recognized official silhouettes in the world, standardized in 1920:
- The Campaign Hat: Made of stiff Belgian hare felt (winter) or Milan straw (summer) in forest green, featuring a four-dent crown and leather band embossed with sequoia cones and foliage.
- The Arrowhead Insignia: The official NPS shoulder patch, authorized in 1952, featuring a Sequoia tree (vegetation), a bison (wildlife), mountains (scenic beauty), and water (recreation and natural resources).
- Duty Gear: Basketweave leather or tactical nylon belt containing sidearm, OC pepper spray, handcuffs, and wilderness emergency radio gear.
US Park Police (USPP): Urban Mounted & Aviation Force
The United States Park Police is one of the oldest uniformed federal law enforcement bodies in the nation, founded by President George Washington in 1791. Unlike backcountry rangers, USPP officers function as full-service metropolitan police officers in Washington D.C., New York City, and San Francisco:
- Horse Mounted Patrol: Renowned mounted unit providing crowd control and perimeter security along the National Mall, White House perimeter, and Lincoln Memorial.
- Aviation Unit: Operating Bell 412 helicopters providing airborne law enforcement, dignitary escort, and medevac rescues along the Potomac River corridor.
The Student Seasonal Academy Pathway (SLETP)
For college students majoring in Criminal Justice, Forestry, or Natural Resource Conservation, the Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program (SLETP) offers an unmatched entry point. Several accredited colleges (such as Northern Arizona University, Southwestern Community College, and Skagit Valley College) partner with the NPS to deliver FLETC-accredited law enforcement curricula during undergraduate semesters.
Graduates receive a seasonal law enforcement commission, allowing college students to spend their summer breaks working as armed federal rangers in iconic parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Grand Teton ($22 to $28/hour plus subsidized park housing).
