The AFROTC Curriculum: GMC vs. POC
Air Force ROTC is organized into two distinct phases:
- General Military Course (GMC - Freshmen & Sophomores): Cadets attend 1 hour of aerospace classroom lectures, a 2-hour Leadership Laboratory (LLAB), and dawn physical training. You learn drill and ceremonies, Air Force heritage, customs and courtesies, and prepare for Field Training.
- Professional Officer Course (POC - Juniors & Seniors): Cadets who pass Field Training earn an Enrollment Allocation (EA) into the POC, receive monthly cash stipends, and run the cadet wing operations, commanding GMC underclassmen.
Field Training at Maxwell AFB: The Critical Hurdle
Unlike Army ROTC which conducts summer training between junior and senior year, Air Force ROTC holds Field Training during the summer between sophomore and junior year.
Cadets undergo high-stress military evaluation at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, Alabama: flight drill evaluations, physical fitness tests, expeditionary obstacle courses, and mock deployment simulations. Only cadets selected with an official Enrollment Allocation (EA) can proceed to junior year and earn their commission.
Direct Commissioning into the United States Space Force
Students majoring in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or Electrical Engineering can compete for direct commissioning into the United States Space Force (USSF) through dedicated Space Force ROTC selection boards:
- Space Operations Officer (13S): Satellite constellations, orbital mechanics, GPS navigation systems, and missile warning defense.
- Cyber Operations Officer (17X): Securing Department of Defense orbital data links and high-altitude defensive cyber operations.
- Intelligence Officer (14N): Analyzing space-based reconnaissance and adversary counter-space threats.
